Depressive art
When spirits surround - CD Review
A few weeks ago I got an email from a guy in Sweden asking me to write something about his band. He said they sounded like Danzig, Johnny Cash and the Doors. I was intrigued to say the least so I told him to send us something for review.
Well Klas Bohlin is obviously pretty serious about his Depressive Art because less than 10 days later I received their 3 song Cd ep 'When spirits surround' in the post.
Depressive art are a gothic rock band with folky overtones. Their singer, Klas definitely reminds me of Danzig for sure especially on the first track - Solar System. I can hear the Doors too thanks to that trippy organ sound. I didn't really hear the Johnny Cash in there but never mind.
I like this cd although I have to admit that only the Solar System song managed to make it onto high rotation around here. Even with the unlikely chorus of ''cause the spirits that surround me/They're making me complete' this song really is quite contagious in it's own mellow way.
The hand claps, backing vocals, timely stops and cool riff all get the thumbs up from me, I like this song. Even though the lyrics are all wishy washy hippy shite I still like this song.
The other two tracks are a little less up beat but still good. They are definitely more sombre and even remind me a little of Tom Waitts but not quite so harsh in the vocal department.
I doubt whether Depressive Art would be the wildest live act out there but they are definitely quite interesting.
